Growth Energy Member Helps Launch Campaign to Show Benefits of Ethanol

Results of Ongoing Study on Ethanol Performance Unveiled at Amaizing Energy Plant

DENISON, IA – Growth Energy, the coalition of U.S. ethanol supporters today announced that member plant Amaizing Energy is hosting the launch of a new campaign designed to show the benefits of ethanol. Iowa school teachers Ty Knott and Todd Goodwater have been testing the effects of ethanol on racecar and truck engines for more than a year. The preliminary results show that ethanol runs cleaner and more efficiently in the engines than either gasoline or methanol.

“If the major automakers start running more ethanol in their engines, they are going to see some of the things I that I am finding which is that you can use ethanol without any complications – ethanol is cleaner, it emits less carbon and it does not wear on your motor,” said Knott, a Special Education teacher at the Woodbine Community School.

Knott initiated the study after realizing that his nephew’s racecar was running cleaner on fewer gallons of ethanol than any other fuel. Knott teamed up with West Harrison Community School FFA instructor Goodwater and local FFA students to examine the situation. For one year, the team collected samples from the engines of local racecars. The samples were then sent to an oil sample lab in Kansas City where they were analyzed. The results of the tests show less carbon, less wear and fewer contaminations in the ethanol compared to the oil-based and methanol fuels.

Knott and Goodwater unveiled their findings at Growth Energy member plant Amaizing Energy today. Amaizing Energy believes that Knott’s findings will help educate consumers about the benefits of ethanol.

“In a time of huge disasters such as the tremendously large oil spill in the gulf, Amaizing Energy is proud to be supporting ethanol and the benefits it can provide our country,” said Amaizing Energy General Manager Brian Evers. “Through local support we can show a much larger audience how well ethanol can power high performance race car engines.  With the campaign we are helping kick-off, we can show not only how ethanol performs but how it helps the longevity of the engines it is used to power.”

Over the summer, Knott and the Ethanol Race Teams ZR1 and 2K will showcase their results at a number of Iowa county fairs and ethanol events. They will continue to test and monitor the engines through the year to help prove that ethanol does not have any impact on the durability of our engines and can be used in all vehicles.

“We need to start showing consumers that they can use this fuel in their engines, and that is what this study is all about,” said Knott. “I want to thank the students, Amaizing Energy and all of the people who have supported and contributed to this ongoing study.”
