JANUARY EVENTS

Monday Funday at United Methodist Church:

Monday Funday will be held at the United Methodist Church, 113 S. 14th St. in Denison, on Monday, January 18th from 1-4pm.  This is a fun, free program for children from grades K-5th.  Drop off times are from 12:30-1pm and pick up times are from 4-4:30pm.  Activities will include crafts, recreation, food, science, music and dance, storytelling and a lesson connected to living a Christian life.  All children are required to wear a mask and social distancing will be implemented.  To sign up, please call the church office at 712.263.2934 between the hours of 9am-1pm on weekdays.  

 

Crawford County 4-H Fruit and Butter Braid Fundraiser:

It is time for Crawford County's 4-H annual fruit and butter braid fundraiser.  The money raised is necessary for county 4-H activities, scholarships, awards, and most importantly to help support your individual clubs. Sales start on January 18 and will end on February 14.  This year's sale will look a little different as all sales will be done online using Fruit Sales website & Butter Braids Sales website.  If you are interested in buying fruit or Butter Braids reach out to a Crawford County 4-Her.  If you don't know a 4-Her we are happy to help you with your order.  Call your local Crawford County Extension office at 263-4697 if you are interested in getting in contact with a 4-Her in your area.

 

COVID-19 Vaccine Update Virtual Town Hall Meeting:

To give area residents more information about the COVID-19 vaccination process, McFarland Clinic-Carroll, St. Anthony Clinic and Carroll County Public Health are partnering to host a virtual Town Hall Meeting on Monday, January 18th  at 5:30pm.  The meeting will be live-streamed at www.stanthonyhospital.org/covid019townhall.  The public is invited to submit questions to info@stanthonyhospital.org.  A recording will be made available when completed on the St. Anthony YouTube channel, as well as on social media through Carroll County Public Health, McFarland Clinic and St. Anthony pages, www.facebook.com/ccphiawww.facebook.com/McFarlandClinic and www.facebook.com/sarhcarroll.

Leap Into Literacy Virtual Program for Parents:

Parents/Caregivers - Join us to learn how to make reading FUN for you and your child at home!  ISU Extension and Outreach are offering this program on January 26, February 2, 9, and 16th from 10-10:30 am or 8-8:30 pm on Zoom to families who live in Crawford County- feel free to choose the time that works for you!  Spanish sessions will be held on Tuesdays Jan 26, Feb 2, 9, and 16 from 6:30-7 pm. This program is intended for parents/caregivers who have children 3-6 years old; your child does not need to attend the virtual meetings but is more than welcome to join. We will discuss ideas and activities to engage your child in reading! Families will receive a free book and reading guide each week. Crawford County Right to Life:

The Crawford County Right to Life group will hold their monthly meeting on January 26th at 7pm at Our Savior Lutheran Church.  Please join us in our venture to save the unborn.  Everyone is welcome!

Great Denison Cardboard Sled Race:

Have some winter fun at The Great Denison Cardboard Sled Race on Saturday, January 30th at the water tower hill located next to the Aquatic Center.  Design and build a person powered, corrugated cardboard sled capable of withstanding the descent down our sled run.  There are awards for the winners of each age bracket, along with the best design, and team spirit. Pre-register online at Denisonrec.com for $10/sled or register the day of the race for $15/sled.  Race categories include 3-7-year-old, 8-11-year-old, 12-18-year-old, adults-only, and family. Teams compete in the bracket of an oldest team member.  Max of 3 participants per sled. Registration begins at 9:30 am for those registering day of; races begin approximately at 10 am.  Saturday, February 20th will serve as a backup date due to lack of snow, blizzard, or extreme sub-zero temperatures.  See rules on file at Denisonrec.com.  Come join in the fun! 

 

Monarch Cheer Camp:

Mark your calendar for "Nothing Can Stop Us" 2021 Monarch Cheer Camp on Saturday, January 30, 2021!  Bring your daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, niece, nephew, friend, or neighbor. Kids from outside the Denison CSD are also welcome! The camp is open to any child in preschool (currently in school and potty trained) through 8th grade. Masks will be required! Camp for preschool through 2nd grade will be from 9 am-11:30 am; camp for 3rd-8th graders from Noon-2:30pm.  The camp fee of $20 includes a t-shirt, instruction from Monarch cheerleaders, snacks, admission, and performance to the Monarch Basketball games on Saturday, January 30.  All Camp Cheerleaders will be invited to cheer and dance at 1/2 time of the Boys JV game (4 pm start) on Saturday, January 30 with an arrival time before 3:15 pm to prepare.  Registration forms being sent home with Denison students.  For more information or if you need a registration form for students outside Denison CSD, please contact Heather Langenfeld at 712.263.3104 or by email at hlangenfeld@denisoncsd.org, or go online to register at Monarch Cheer Camp Online Registration

Middle School Madness:

The first "Middle School Madness" will be held on February 3rd from 6-8 pm at the United Methodist Church. Join in the fun with a FREE evening of food and games with your friends! Glow-in-the-dark 9 Square in the Air and glow-in-the-dark bag toss will be the events scheduled for the evening.  Snacks will also be available. Come to eat, stay to play, tell your friends! This event will continue on the 1st Wednesday of each month until the end of the school year.

Women in Business Impact Organization Meeting:

This month's WIBIO meeting will be held via Zoom at 8:30 am.  Membership is free and all women are welcome to attend.  For more information on this organization, contact a member or the CDC Office at 712-263-5621.

Methodist Church Soup Supper:

The First United Methodist Church in Denison will be holding their annual Soup Supper on Wednesday, February 10 at their location, 113 S. 14th St. It will be a drive-thru only beginning at 4:30 pm until they run out.  No presale tickets will be available.  For $10 you will receive a quart of soup and cookies.  Soups offered include homemade chicken noodle, chili, and ham and beans.

Norelius Community Library Virtual Agriculture Read-along:

Norelius Community Library will be hosting a monthly read-along with Loess Hills Agriculture in the Classroom on the second Thursday of each month at 4 pm.  Families can enjoy a virtual storytime from a farm featuring the My Family's Farm book series.  After reading each story, participants will have a chance to see animals, crops, and other things on the farm.  The programs will be live so students can have their questions answered in real-time and learn more about agriculture. Each program will focus on a different topic.  To view the live stream, viewers should go to the Norelius Community Library Facebook page and scroll down until they see the video. Activity kits and invitations to the live program are available and can be picked up during regular library hours two weeks before each program.  The program is supported in part by the Crawford County Farm Bureau.

The CDC Office will be closed on February 15, 2021, in observance of President's Day.  The office will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, February 15 at 8:30 am.  For urgent business, please call 712.269.2710.

PALS Training is for early childhood providers to learn the best practices of physical activity for children birth to five, to support practice and policy changes.  The cost is $5 per session and training is provided online.  Receive childcare license renewal approved by Iowa Dept. of Human Services (DS). Credit hours equal the number of hours each session is scheduled.  Courses are scheduled throughout February and March. February Dates and topics include February 22 (6:30-8 pm) - PALS: Importance of Physical Activity in Early Childhood; February 24 (6:30-7:30 pm) - PALS: Best Practices - Time and Space as well as sessions on March 1, 3, and 4.  Register on I-PoWeR (Training Registry) by going to https:ccmis.dhs.state.ia.us/trainingregistry and search by session date.  Please contact Ann Parker (aeparker@iastate.edu) or Mary Krisco (mkrisco@iastate.edu).
