Letters From Home: Vanessa Gunderson

The following letter was written prior to the death of George Floyd and the nationwide racial equality protests.
Hey Mav fans!
Even throughout all this craziness, I've been keeping busy during quarantine! Since campus closed, I have been spending most of my time in Omaha working at an amazing company, Quality Living Inc., as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Even though many people are working from home and visitors aren't allowed, the residents there still need people to care for them, so they are super excited to see us every day! Aside from working, I am running, lifting, and doing other workouts with whatever equipment I can find around the house - I've had to get pretty creative!
Track and Field Blocks
With the Spring semester ending (in mid-May), I can safely say that it went pretty well despite the transition to online learning! Adapting to it was a pretty big change at first, but I stuck with it and eventually got used to the format; however, I can't wait to learn in a classroom or a lab on campus again! Our coaches and professors at UNO did an amazing job of making learning as accessible as possible from home as well as just being there for us if we needed to talk.
Although I've been staying busy, I miss so much about UNO's campus as well as all the people on it. The longer I am away, the more I am starting to realize some smaller things I took for granted: practices every day with my amazing teammates, conversations with my coaches, walking to class, and even sitting through those labs that never seem to come to an end. Most of all, though, I miss how close-knit the community is as a whole: my freshman year was truly one of the best of my life.
Words can't describe just how much I appreciate our athletics program and Maverick fanbase. I truly feel that everyone that wears Omaha across their chest is proud to do so. I sure am. When our indoor season started this year I wasn't able to compete due to a back injury so when it came time that I was able to compete, it was a crazy mixture of nervous and excited. I couldn't wait to finally rep the community and university I love. Although our outdoor season got taken away, I wouldn't trade the new memories and new friends I made this year for anything; and I can't wait to get back on campus to create even more.
I hope all of Maverick Nation is staying safe and healthy, and I can't wait to see everyone again!
