Denison City Council approves new budget, DMU CDBG grant application
The Denison City Council hosted a pair of public hearings before passing the related items Tuesday night at their second regular meeting of March.
The council received no oral or written objections to the budget for the next fiscal year or a request by Denison Municipal Utilities to apply for a Community Development Block Grant. They later approved the resolution which approved the budget for 2022-23. They also resolved to authorize DMU’s DCBG application for their water improvement system.
The council hosted a 10-minute discussion about the Housing Board’s recommendation to apply for Region XII’s Down Payment Assistance Program. The members moved to commit a total of $33,000 from LMI funds to apply for six projects in that program.
The council approved temporary special event permits and waived the related fees for Hot Summer Night and Manilla Madness Bike Ride events. They amended their development agreement with the CDC to extend that deadline to April 29th. They resolved to support Deputy Clerk Christy Welch attending and seeking a tuition scholarship for training at the Iowa Municipal Professionals Institute. They also reappointed Deb Frehse to the Boulders Commission.
The council reached a consensus to move forward on finalizing a development agreement for seven new affordable housing units with Jim Johnson. They will hold a public hearing at a future meeting before officially entering into an agreement. They also established an insurance panel for review of quotes expected by 4 p.m. on April 4th by unanimous consent.
The council and Roger Waderich discussed possibly leasing the City impound lot to Waderich Towing at the rate of $300 per month. The conversation lasted almost 15 minutes and the item was tabled so that Waderich and new Police Chief Brandon Rinnan can discuss it further.
