Sac City Receives $75,000 REAP Grant to Revitalize Blighted Land Along Raccoon River
Sac City has been awarded a $75,000 grant through Iowa’s Resources Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program to restore a six-acre parcel of blighted land along the Raccoon River. Located north of the old grain elevator, this area has long been used as an illegal dumping ground for tires and various debris, posing environmental and safety risks to the community.
The grant funding will be used to clear the site of hazardous waste, including the tires and other pollutants, and rehabilitate the area by replanting native vegetation. This restoration will not only improve the local ecosystem but also create a welcoming habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.
Beyond environmental cleanup, the project will expand Sac City’s nature trail system, offering residents and visitors more space for outdoor recreation, educational activities, and community engagement. City officials see the revitalization as an opportunity to enhance both the environment and quality of life in Sac City for years to come.
With the funding secured, the city anticipates completing the trail expansion and land restoration by the end of 2025. This effort is part of a broader commitment to long-term environmental sustainability and creating a healthier, more vibrant community.
