Hog Confinement Catches Fire Twice in One Week, Multiple Departments Respond

Hog Confinement Catches Fire Twice in One Week, Multiple Departments Respond

Firefighters were called back to a hog confinement west of Breda Friday morning after the structure reignited—just days after first catching fire.

The Wall Lake Fire Department says crews initially responded to the property in the 3000 block of B Avenue, about 10 miles west of Breda, around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Fire departments from Westside and Vail also assisted in extinguishing a fire in a hog shed. At the time, animals were inside the building, but responders were able to get the flames under control within about an hour. The fire was traced back to a burner used for heating. Although the building remained intact, the northwest side sustained significant damage.

On Friday around 9:45 a.m., the Wall Lake and Breda departments were dispatched again to the same location after flames reignited in the damaged northwest corner. Fortunately, no animals were inside during the second fire. Additional structural damage was reported, but the confinement remains standing.
