The Second Annual Immigrant Heritage Festival Kicks Off On Saturday

On Saturday, June 24th LULAC Denison will be hosting the Second Annual Immigrant Heritage Festival. The festival is a celebration of the many vibrant cultural groups, both old and new, who have made Denison and West Central, Iowa, home. Alma Puga, the current president of LULAC in Denison, talks more about the organization. “So LULAC is actually the largest and oldest Latino civil rights organization. We’re a non-profit, non-partisan organization that’s open to any race. So our mission is to advance the economic condition, educational performance, housing, health, and civil rights of Latinos in the United States.” LULAC does things such as volunteer work for the community, May Day baskets for nursing home residents, and cultural events, and now they fundraise for scholarship programs. “The first year that we started it, we gave out two $1,000 scholarships to Denison High School students. And the second year we gave out three. And this year we will be awarding five.” Puga first chartered the Denison chapter of LULAC back in 2019. “I help with the scholarship committee. I help with, of course, the Immigrant Heritage Festival Committee.” For last year’s Immigrant Heritage Festival, over 1,000 people were in attendance. And they raised over $6,000 for scholarship programs. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers, and hopefully this year we can reach our goal of about $8,000.” This year's Immigrant Heritage Festival will begin at the post office at 2:30 pm with a parade, followed by a festival that will take place from 3 until 8 pm at Washington Park. For more information or to get involved, you can go to LULAC Denison’s Facebook page, or email them directly at lulac.denison@gmail.com. Information about the organization and event is also available on their website, LULACDenison.org. The Second Annual Immigrant Heritage Festival will take place on June 24th from 2:30 pm until 8 pm at Washington Park. A parade, delicious foods, and fun performances will bring people together from across West Central, Iowa for unique shared experiences and to support LULAC’s scholarship program.
