City of Denison Mayor Gives Update on Log Cabin in Washington Park
Mayor for the City of Denison, Pam Soseman, recently sat down with KDSN News to answer questions and provide the local community with where the City is at in regards to the log cabin in Washington Park. Soseman said park planning in general has been a long process. “It’s been a long planning process for the park and it started with the old kids castle that needed to come down. We knew it was rotting , decaying and that we were going to need to replace the equipment there. But during this whole planning process, you’re talking to the Park and Recs Board. They listen to people’s wants, desires and needs. There needs to be other shelters in Denison, places people can rent and when the kids castle suddenly came down; that fast tracked that portion of the park.” Soseman said the City was made aware of the log cabin’s condition last May. “We were made aware that the log cabin was not in good shape and so they did do a search for someone who could repair that and the quote came in at $45,000. We know the log cabin has been in place for just under 100 years. It is not native to Denison, it is native to Crawford County. It was moved from Dow City by the Kiwanis.” Soesman said the City budget was a major factor. “You’re also looking at working within a budget and we know this is going to be outside the city’s budget. Fundraising has happened in the past for replacement equipment at Washington Park”. Soseman said no decision on the log cabin in Washington Park has been made and there is a certain group that will be looking at the log cabin. “This entity is bringing somebody in to look at the log cabin, see if it can be moved, what the cost would be to repair it.
