50-year-old record could fall at the Drake Relays

A fifty-year-old record could fall on Saturday in the women's invitational mile at the Drake Relays. It was April 26 of 1975, when Francie Larrieu Smith won the mile in a record time of four minutes, 40-point-two seconds. Larrieu Smith made five U-S Olympic teams and won more than a dozen U-S championships at various distances. Iowa natives Karissa Schweizer and Shelby Houlihan will be part of the field that will try to run down the record. Larrieu Smith remembers there was a strong field that day at Drake 50 years ago. When Larrieu Smith set the record 50 years ago, the mile was the marquee event in U-S track and field. Schweizer finished second in the U-S 1 Mile Road Championship on Tuesday night and will be part of Saturday's field in the mile. Sioux City native Shelby Houlihan finished fourth on Tuesday night and is the American record holder in the 1500 meters.
