Karen Steuart

Private Memorial Services will be held.
Karen Kay Steuart was born October 14, 1939, in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Vernon and Bette Hansen. She passed away Friday, May 8, 2020, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty.
Karen was baptized into Christ March 2, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, by Rev. C.W. Schmidt and confirmed by Rev. Schmidt March 29, 1953, also at Zion. Being quite intelligent, Karen was allowed to advance a grade and started her senior year at the age of fifteen before graduating from Denison High School. She was united in marriage to Louie Duncan and the couple lived in California while Louie was in the service. Upon returning to Denison, Karen was employed as a legal secretary for the Gilcrest Law Office. She then was employed at Iowa Beef Processors in Emporia, Kansas, working the night shift so that she could attend beauty school. After receiving her beautician’s license, she returned to Iowa and owned the Tears and Shears Beauty Shop for nearly twenty years. Her employment years continued as she partnered with Morris Kuker in operating the Circle K Bar and then moved to Omaha where she was a telemarketer. After retiring in 2018, she moved back to Iowa and lived in Charter Oak.
Playing cards was her favorite pastime, even traveling to area towns to play. Karen also enjoyed going to the casino, bowling, vegetable gardening and canning the produce she grew. She was a good cook and will be remembered for her canned spaghetti sauce. Through the years, she shared her home with her cats and had a special place in her heart for them.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include: one daughter, Deb and her husband, Rick; two granddaughters, Niki and Rachel and her husband, Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Ty and Ava; other relatives and friends.

Carlton Petersen, 85, Schleswig

Visitation for 85 year old Carlton “Carlie” Petersen of Schleswig
will be held 9 – 10:30 A.M. Friday, at the Huebner Funeral Home in
Schleswig. Groups of 10 people will rotate in 15 minute intervals. He
passed away Sunday at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in
Denison. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig in charge of

graveside service Friday at 11:15 A.M. maintaining social distancing.
Survivors include: his son, Kurt Petersen and his wife, Tracy of
Bennington, Nebraska; son-in-law, Dumas Simeus of Texas; two
grandchildren; one sister, Joleen Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska; other
relatives and friends.
Once again Visitation for 85 year old Carlton “Carlie” Petersen of
Schleswig will be held 9-10:30 A.M., Friday at the Huebner Funeral
Home in Schleswig.  The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig is in charge

Larry Eugene Parr, age 73, of Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at his residence of Battle Creek, Iowa.

 

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., at the Armstrong – Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa, with Pastor Harvey Hanson officiating. Velva Rae McCuen

Velva Rae McCuen, 69, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Mapleton, Iowa, passed
away Sunday, May 17, 2020 at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa.
Graveside Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at Crawford Heights
Memory Gardens Cemetery, Denison Iowa, with Darren C. E. Goslar officiating.
Visitation will be 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at the Rush Family Chapel,
Onawa, Iowa (WE WILL LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE FUNERAL HOME TO
NO MORE THAN 10 AT ONE TIME.- Due to Covid- 19 regulations). Arrangements are
under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.
Velva Rae McCuen was born August 19, 1950, in Denison, Iowa, daughter of
Ardelbert William and Lorraine Sophie (Jochims) Preul. She grew up in Denison, Iowa
and attended Denison Community Schools.
Velva (Pruel) and Don Bubke were united into marriage in 1968. To this union three
children were born Joel, Michele, and Dean. The couple resided on a farm near
Mapleton, Iowa for many years. She then moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 2000. Velva
later married Merle L. McCuen August 25, 2010 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Velva stayed at home and raised her three children. Later in life she worked for
various convenience stores doing customer service in Mapleton, Iowa and Des
Moines, Iowa. She was currently working at Casey’s in Des Moines, Iowa.
She was a wrestling mom and enjoyed going to all the kid’s activities. She loved to
sew, bake, play cards and attend antique/garage/estate sales. Velva enjoyed
spending time with her family and friends especially her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her three children, Joel (Sandy) Bubke of Mapleton, Iowa, Michele
(Larry) Lindquist of Kasson, Minnesota, and Dean Bubke of Mapleton, Iowa; six
grandchildren, Samantha (Andrew) Mather of LaVista, Nebraska, Christopher Silva of
Omaha, Nebraska, Taya Lindquist of Kasson, Minnesota, Trey Lindquist of Kasson,
Minnesota, Kaylee (Cody Weber) Bubke of Mapleton, Iowa and Kenedee Bubke of
Mapleton, Iowa; and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Aiden Mather of
LaVista, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ardelbert and Lorraine (Jochims) Preul;
one brother, Dudley Pruel; and her husband, Merle McCuen, who passed away May
1, 2020.

Bob Weber

A vehicle graveside service for 90-year-old Bob Weber of Dunlap will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2020, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Mr. Weber died at home on Friday, April 24, 2020.

Lois Duncan

Private Family Services will be held.

Lois Louise Duncan was born January 22, 1928, to Nohna and Dora Pithan near Berne, Iowa. She passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020, at her home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-two.
Lois was baptized into Christ February 19, 1928, and confirmed March 29, 1942, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She received her education in the Ute and Charter Oak public schools and St. John’s Lutheran School. Following her graduation from Charter Oak High School and Normal Training, Lois taught in the rural schools and ten years at St. John’s Lutheran School.
Lois was united in marriage to Erwin Bohlmann May 9, 1948, and they farmed for eight years until Erwin’s failing health. They moved to Charter Oak and owned and operated a drive-in restaurant and bakery. Erwin passed away in 1968.
In 1969, Lois was united in marriage to Jack Duncan and they made their home in Denison. She was employed at BoJangles as an assistant manager, manager for the Spirit Cellar Liquor Store, deli clerk for Hy-Vee, shift leader at Lil Duffer restaurant and chief cook at Café Amour. She retired in 1997 to care for Jack, who passed away in 1998.
Lois was a member of St. John’s Ladies Aid, Sunday School teacher and choir member in Charter Oak. She joined Zion Lutheran Church in Denison in 1969. Lois enjoyed her flowers, caring for her lawn, birds, reading and loved attending her Bible Class.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Nohna and Dora; stepmother Ida, stepmother Verna; her husbands, Erwin and Jack; sister, Dorothy and husband, Ras; sister-in-law, Peggy; grandnephew, Brian; great-grandnephew, Robert; and sister-in-law, Mary Jane. Survivors include: her brother, Leonard; two nieces, Patty and her husband, Mike, and Charlene and her husband, Jerry; two nephews, Scott and his wife, Virginie, and Nohna and his wife, Joelle; one grandniece, Jennifer and her husband, Ian; five grandnephews: Victor and fiancée Amanda, Kevin, Taylor, Cody and Ethan; three great-grandnieces: Maci, Mallory and Miah; three great-grandnephews: Kaiden, Michael and Logan; other relatives and friends.

Rhonda Nemitz

Rhonda Sue (Maack) Nemitz was born on January 9, 1960, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, to Ronald and JoAnn Maack. She passed away Friday, May 22, 2020 at her home near Kiron, at the age of sixty.
Rhonda grew up in the Charter Oak area. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charter Oak in 1974 and graduated from Charter Oak- Ute High School in 1978. After high school, Rhonda graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from Morningside College in 1982 and started working for Franck, Mundt, Nepper and Franck Law Office in Denison. On June 26, 1982, Rhonda was united in marriage to Robert Klein at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap and they resided in the Charter Oak area. Robert and Rhonda were blessed with a son, Matthew. In December 1983, Robert passed away.
On September 3, 1988, Rhonda was united in marriage to Barry Nemitz and later moved to their current farm near Kiron where they were blessed with two sons, Evan and Dane. Rhonda continued working at the law firm for 34 years. She also served on the Schleswig Community School District School Board for almost 20 years, most of which as President.
Rhonda loved the farm, and she often could be seen tending her many flower beds where she showed off her green thumb. During the summer months, she enjoyed going on walks with her two dogs, Molly and Daisy. Rhonda enjoyed RAGBRAI as well as many other bike rides around the area. She also enjoyed any kind of traveling and riding along in the semitruck with Evan. Come Saturdays in the fall, you could find her headed to Iowa City to cheer on her Iowa Hawkeyes, often with Jack and Charlotte Johnson & Trevor. Rhonda would spoil her grandkids every opportunity she could as she loved spending time with them and taking them on trips. Holidays were always special with all the presents and love that Rhonda gave her grandchildren. “Where’s Meema?” was always the first question when Rhonda wasn’t there to let them in the house.
Rhonda is survived by her husband, Barry; three sons, Matt (Mary) and their children Eleanor and Adelaide, Evan Nemitz and his children, Eli and Gracyn, and Dane; close nephew, Trevor; her parents, Ronald and JoAnn; one sister, Deb (Jon); nephew T.J. and niece Dr. Brianna and fiancé Dr. Colton; mother-in-law, Delores; brother-in-law, Scott; sister-in-law, KLynn; niece, Kristin; other relatives and friends.

Audrey Steffen

Graveside Services for  94 year old Audrey Steffen of Charter Oak will
be held Friday at 10:30 A.M. at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in
Denison. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison is in charge of
arrangements. She passed away Saturday at her home in Charter Oak.
Survivors include:   two sons, Russell Steffen and his wife, Michele
of Dow City, Iowa, and Randy Steffen and his wife, Lisa of Charter
Oak, Iowa; one daughter, Roxann Steffensen and her husband, Neil of
Thompson, Iowa; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one
brother, Jerry Boger of Denison, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Delores
Greene of Denison, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Charles Steffen and his
wife, Joy of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; other relatives and friends.

Frances Plagge

Frances JoAnn Plagge was born December 25, 1931, in Union Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert and Clara Furne. She passed away Monday, May 25, 2020, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of eighty-eight surrounded by family who love her.
JoAnn received her grade school education in the Arion school and following her education, she worked at a dairy farm in Minnesota for a few years. JoAnn was united in marriage to Louis Plagge November 14, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, officiated by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. JoAnn was employed at the local packing plants, Dubuque Pack in Denison and the turkey plant in Carroll. After Louis passed away in 1987, JoAnn began her home cleaning company, Housewives, Inc.
Playing cards was a favorite pastime for Frances, which her family lovingly says she “cheated at them”. She also enjoyed listening to polkas and attending polka nights with the Collins on Fridays at the Golden Nugget. Watching The Young and the Restless on television brought her many hours of entertainment. In her younger days, she enjoyed dancing and roller skating. Cooking and baking were also favorite activities and she will be remembered for her homemade chicken noodle soup and 7-Up when anyone was sick. Frances loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; two sons, Kyle and Lyle; and one brother, Robert. Survivors include: three daughters, Cindy and her husband, Robert, Robin and her husband, Joe, and Lyla and her husband, Tim; one son, Myron; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one daughter-in-law, Patty; other relatives and friends.

Private family services will be held for 61 year old Joseph Maher, formally of Manilla. The Huebner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements where a public visitation will be held Saturday (5/30) from 11am-1pm.

Survivors include: six sisters, Jean Cornelius of Denison, Susan Sedlak and husband Bob of Omaha, Sharon Hoffman and husband Denny of Vail, Mary Jane Durand and husband Richard of Omaha, Marian Maher of California and Rosemary McDermott and husband Mitch of Florida. One brother, John Maher and wife Nicola of United Kingdom, many nieces, nephews other relatives & friends.
