Statement from Audubon Superintendent Trevor Miller regarding move to Rolling Valley Conference
Noah Caruso reached out to ask Audubon superintendent Trevor Miller after Audubon school board unanimously voted (5-0) to join the Rolling Valley Conference starting in the 2027-28 school year.
1. What ultimately led to the decision to join the RVC?
The school board was looking at how our district has changed and our enrollment is lower than any other school in the WIC. The board looked at what is best for our district not only now but in the future as we don't see ourselves having huge growth. Travel was another option. If you look at our football district that we play most schools that are in the RVC are in the district which means similar size. It was our school board looking over all the different data points that Sean Birks, Activities Director, provided and understanding that this is a great opportunity for our school.
The WIC is a great conference and we are looking forward to our continued partnerships for the next couple of years as we transition for the 27-28 school year. We will still look at playing some of the schools in the future in non-conference. It was a very tough decision for the board, they took their time, reviewed the information, asked questions and ultimately decided joining the RVC was the best opportunity for our students.
2. What are the immediate benefits of joining this new conference?
Immediate benefits won't start until 27-28 when we join. Which will be less travel, building on some of the local rivalries, and playing schools of similar size.
3. What's the athletic outlook and goals for the future?
Our athletic outlook is solid, we have really good boys numbers through 7th grade, the girls numbers have been lower in a few of our sports, but some of our younger classes have larger numbers. We value our partnership with Exira-EHK and when the opportunity or need arises for one of us we will reach out to see if we continue to share, add new activities etc. Both school boards have signed an MOU this month with some guidance on when to reach out etc. This will help alleviate confusion by parents and communities and help answer the why.
4. Potential fun new conference rivalries you're excited to see
If you look CAM, Exira-EHK, Coon Rapids-Bayard, are three close ones. It will also depend on what IKM-Manning decides to do at their next board meeting on Monday. We can continue as conference rivals, or make sure since a close trip to play non-conference is always a good atmosphere.
Also Glidden-Ralston, Boyer Valley, PC, ARWEVA, Woodbine which we play all but PC in football as well and have played ost in non-conference contests in the past.
