IKM-Manning Facility Upgrades on Ballot in March
IKM-Manning is asking voters to approve nearly $8 million for continued facility upgrades in their upcoming special election.
Superintendent Trevor Miller says the proposed renovations to the northeast corner of the Manning campus include a new gymnasium, locker rooms, commons area, and spark/fire room.
“We only have one gym location so we’re looking to add a multi-purpose second gym. Our locker rooms haven’t been redone since the sixties or early seventies. We’re known in Iowa for our STEM fire and spark programs. This will allow us to build a room that has the right exhaust and setup because we have a student-run business that does printing and engraving. It also allows for collaboration space,” Miller said.
He says the measure borrows against existing funds from the statewide one-cent sales tax or SAVE bond and it would not affect local property or sales tax rates. He says some people raised concerns but the school board voted for the project unanimously.
“Are we addressing the right issues? Other people are like should we pay off a different debt? Which isn’t how the resolution is set up. Yeah so there have been some concerns about the direction but the board has made it clear 7-0 that this is the direction they want to go,” Miller said.
The measure needs a majority vote for approval on Tuesday, March 7.
