16-year Charged after climbing KCAU 9 tower
On October 24 2024 at 11:04 AM the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a person attempting to climb the KCAU tower in rural Plymouth County. Upon arrival a suspicious vehicle was found in the area. A deputy then was able to visually identify a person on the tower at approximately 1,500 feet. Assistance was immediately requested from area agencies. Sioux City Fire Rescue responded to conduct a high angle rescue. SCFR started their rescue operation at approximately 12:30 PM. At approximately 1:03 PM the suspect and all rescue personnel were off the tower. The suspect, a 16-year-old male from South Sioux City, Nebraska was cleared by medical personnel and taken into custody by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect was transported to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office and charged with trespass on a public utility, a Class D Felony. A portion of K42 near the tower was closed during the operation. KCAU was taken off air for a period of time as well.
Assisting agencies included, Le Mars, Hinton and Kinglsey Police Departments, Iowa State Patrol, Hinton Fire and Ambulance, Sioux City Fire Rescue and KCAU staff.
