Carroll Broadcasting reports members of Manning Fire and Rescue recently celebrated John Lorenzen’s promotion to fire chief following the retirement of Bob Barsby, the department’s longtime chief. Barsby served for nearly three decades as either assistant or fire chief, providing leadership to Manning, Aspinwall, and the surrounding communities. Lorenzen noted that after almost 30 years of dedicated service, Barsby was ready to pass the torch.
Having grown up in Manning, Lorenzen witnessed firsthand the vital role the fire department played in the community. Although he briefly lived in Des Moines, he returned to Manning in 2005 after realizing his true calling was in public service.
Now stepping into the chief’s position, Lorenzen acknowledges the significant legacy Barsby leaves behind, and while he doesn’t have specific goals set, he is focused on supporting the department to reach its full potential.
Lorenzen encourages anyone interested in joining the volunteer department to reach out by calling the station at 712-655-2496. He is eager to assist new recruits with any questions and guide them through the training process. Lorenzen also expressed his gratitude to Barsby for his mentorship and to the entire department for their support as he transitions into his new leadership role.
