Harlan house fire claims two lives

Two people were killed in a house fire Tuesday afternoon in western Iowa’s Shelby County.
Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen says they got the call about 4 PM, and when firefighters arrived, the house was full of smoke.
“The neighbor was confident that there were some people in the house,” Bissen says. “We made entry, and we were quickly able to locate two victims, and we got those victims out of the house.”
Despite life-saving efforts, both people died. A third resident of the house was not at home at the time. The victims’ names were not released.
Four area fire departments fought the blaze. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Harlan police, and the state fire marshal.
