Sac City Man to Face Jury Trial in Assault on Former Sheriff

SAC CITY, Iowa — A Sac County man accused of violently attacking former Sheriff Jonathan Meyer will face a jury this fall.
Thirty-four-year-old Matthew Birt is scheduled to go on trial on November 4 at the Sac County Courthouse. He faces two Class C felony charges: willful injury causing serious injury and assault on a peace officer with intent to inflict serious injury. Each count carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
Court documents allege the incident happened on August 25 at Meyer’s home. Investigators say Birt tackled and beat Meyer before attempting to strangle him, all while Meyer’s young child was present. Witnesses reported that Meyer did not retaliate during the assault. He sustained multiple injuries, including a concussion, broken facial bones, and a torn ear that required stitches.
Birt has entered a not guilty plea. He is free on a $35,000 bond under strict pretrial conditions, including a no-contact order with Meyer and his family.
In the aftermath of the attack, Meyer resigned from his position as sheriff, citing personal reasons. Chief Deputy Katie Stange has since been appointed to lead the department.
The prosecution is being handled by Greene County Attorney Thomas Laehn.
