Comments by Coach Eller: “We felt good at halftime as we got out of there 0-0 despite our
team facing the sun the entire 1st half as well as going against a 25-40 mph diagonal cross
wind. Amy Estrada had a fantastic half in goal with 12 saves. We played great defense by
marking up well for the most part and making Kuemper take almost all of their shots outside of
18 yards. Kyra Hawn shut out their leading scorer who had 16 goals in only 6 games so far this
season, and we played great team defense in the 1st half. However, the mistake bug bit us just
42 seconds into the 2nd half. We picked up a pass inside our box, but our punt was a 15 yard
shank to the middle of the field that went right to a Kuemper midfielder who hit the 35 yard shot
with the goalkeeper up in the box. Then, less than 4 minutes later we had multiple opportunities
to clear a ball in our defensive third of the field but couldn’t do it. Kuemper got a corner kick as
we chose to kick the ball out of bounds. Their corner kick pinballed off of several feet before a
Kuemper player volleyed the ball in from 3 yards out. That has been a big problem for us this
season as giving up 1 goal has too often snowballed into giving up a 2nd quick goal. We did
have some opportunities, but our best shots weren’t on goal and our shots on goal didn't make
their goalkeeper have to work for any of her saves. This game can be summed up as Kuemper
made us pay for 2 huge mistakes that we made and we couldn’t make Kuemper pay for any of
their mistakes. Once we got down 2-0, I was disappointed that we got away from short passing
and played too much long ball. It was way too windy to play longball and we ended up kicking a
lot of balls out of bounds instead of giving us shots with the diagonal cross wind at our back and
their keeper looking into the sun in the 2nd half. We need to learn from this and always play our
style of ball with short passing and creating opportunities for our teammates. Kuemper has a lot
of speed and we hung with them for the entire game. If we can clean up our mistakes,
