Boys District Tennis Results 05/08/2023

1A District 4 @ Denison-Schleswig

Singles District Champion: Christian Jensen
Singles Runner-Up: Josh Steffen, Storm Lake
Jensen def. Steffen 6-4, 6-2

Doubles Champion: Michael Meis and Evan Pratt, LeMars
Doubles Runners-Up: Wyatt Johnson and Carson Seuntjens, Denison-Schleswig
Meis/Pratt def. Johnson/Seuntjens 6-1, 6-1

This is the first year for the boys that the District Tournament didn’t decide which teams would
advance to postseason play. Instead it only took the top 2 places in singles and in doubles and
qualified them for the Individual State Tournament held on Tuesday, May 23 and Wednesday,
May 24 in Byrnes Park in Waterloo, IA. Denison-Schleswig had its doubles team of Wyatt
Johnson and Carson Seuntjens place 2nd and qualify for the tournament. Their other doubles
team of Braden Curnyn and Gavin Hipnar placed 4th.
Singles Results 1st Place Christian Jensen, Lewis Central
2nd Place Josh Steffen, Storm Lake
Doubles Results 1st Place Michael Meis/Evan Pratt, LeMars

2nd Place Wyatt Johnson/Carson Seuntjens, Denison-Schleswig

Wyatt Johnson/Carson Seuntjens (seeded 2nd))
1st Round defeated St. Albert’s #2 McCoy Daley/William Tallman 6-0, 6-0
2nd Round defeated LeMar’s #2 Caden Wurth/Jacob McGill 6-1, 6-4
Semifinals defeated Lewis Central’s #2 Drew White/Broedy Johnson 6-4, 7-6(4)
Finals lost to Lemar’s #1 Michael Meis/Evan Pratt 1-6,1-6

2nd Place Finish

In the semifinals against Lewis Central, we had a hard time holding serve but were fortunate to
keep breaking L.C.'s servers. Despite trailing through much of each set we managed to come
through at the end and claim a 7-4 tiebreak win to make it to state. This will be Johnson and
Seuntjens 2nd consecutive trip to the State Doubles Tournament.

Braden Curnyn/Gavin Hipnar
1st Round defeated St. Albert’s #1 Cole Pekny/Noah Narmi 7-6(9),6-1
2nd Round defeated Heelan’s #1 Jason Breen/Luka Ernesti 6-0, 6-4
Semi-finals lost to LeMar’s #1 Michael Meis/Evan Pratt 1-6,2-6
Consolation lost to Lewis Central’s #2 Drew White/Broedy Johnson 6-1,6-7(5),0-1(7)

4th Place Finish

Braden and Gavin played fantastic today. In their first two matches they jumped out 3-0 leads
and were able to bear down when the matches got close. They have developed into an
impressive doubles team.

Cole Kastner
1st Round defeated Storm Lake’s #7 Sebastian Cortez 6-1, 6-0
2nd Round lost to Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s #3 Nathan Meyers 3-6, 2-6

Cole Kastner played well today, but just ran into a player with a good deal more experience.

Blaine Brodsky
1st Round lost to 2nd seeded Storm Lake’s #1 Josh Steffen 0-6,0-6

Blaine was unlucky to get the draw he did. Storm Lake’s #1 player has qualified for the State
Singles Tournament for the past two years and today he made it #3 by placing 2nd.

Comments
Carson and Wyatt took a riskier path by playing doubles instead of singles, but the decision paid
off and we have another doubles team playing in the State Tournament! It is a shame that
LeMars doubles team is so talented, because Braden Curnyn and Gavin Hipnar have been
playing well enough to also qualify. Teamwise there are still so many areas we need to improve
upon and hopefully we’ll get it figured out by Friday’s Substate in Council Bluffs.
Next Action: Friday, May 12 Substate Round 1 against St. Albert Council Bluffs 9:00AM
