2023 Boys State Individual and Doubles Tennis day one results

The first day of competition has wrapped up for the Class 1A and 2A Boys State Single and Doubles Tennis Tournaments. First round, quarterfinal, and first round consolation matches were contested on the opening day.

In Class 1A play, at Byrnes Park in Waterloo, Atlantic’s Clevi Johnson bowed out in singles play with two losses. Johnson lost in the first round to Christian Jensen of Lewis Central 6-1, 6-0. Then in first round consolation play Johnson fell 6-0, 6-0 to Cody Overland of Boone.

After defeating Johnson, LC’s Jensen lost in the quarterfinals 6-2,6-0 to Ethan Moon of North Polk. Southwest Valley’s Evan Timmerman lost his first round match 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Tate Meymeyer of Aplington-Parkersburg. He then stayed alive with a consolation win 6-1, 6-0 over Trent Turba of Grinnell. Shenandoah’s Andrew Lawrence lost his opener to Caden Branum of Decorah 6-1, 6-2. He then won in consolations 6-5, 6-1 over Ben Van Gorp of Pella. Kuemper Catholic’s Mason Reicks lost to Josh Steffen of Storm Lake in the first round 6-2, 6-1. He then defeated Beau Bush of Pella 6-1, 6-4 in consolations.

In doubles play Glenwood’s Ben Batten & Brody Taylor fell 6-0, 6-0 in the first round to Jack Briggs & Joshua Roozeboom of Pella. They then lost to Tamer Bush & Ben Keine of Grinnell 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in consolations to drop out of play. The Rams’ other duo of Kayden Anderson & Tyler Harger won their opener 2-6,6-4,6-3 over Wyatt Johnson & Carson Seuntjens of Denison-Schleswig. They then lost in the quarterfinals 6-2,6-2 to Landon Baker & Daniel Skrade of Decorah to fall to 2nd round consolations. Denison’s Wyatt Johnson & Carson Seuntjens went on to lose in first round consolations 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 to Tamer Bush & Ben Keine of Grinnell.
