Severe Weather Likely Causes Several Million Dollars in Damages
Emergency Management Coordinator Greg Miller said that last night’s severe weather has probably caused millions of dollars in damages. Some of these damages were agricultural, such as washed out hillsides that have already been planted.
“I would say several million dollars worth of damage. A lot of it was personal property, so I probably will declare the area a disaster area.”
Miller said the wind damage was slight, but the hail damage was significant. The hail caused damages to vehicles, houses, roofs, siding, mobile homes, travel trailers, and damages around houses.
“You could hear it on the patrol car vehicles when they were calling the radio, how bad it was.”
Miller extended his thanks to the volunteers who sustained hail damages to their vehicles while watching the weather and keeping him informed. He also thanked KDSN for providing information to the public during severe weather events.
Deb Gress said she and her son were driving home from Denison when they hit the worst of the storm. Hail struck and cracked the windshield of the vehicle they were driving.
“Yeah it was scary! I’ve never really driven under a funnel cloud and I don’t recommend it!”
Miller said that it is helpful and appreciated when the public sends him pictures and videos during these kinds of events. He said if people have damages, send them via Facebook to Crawford County Iowa Emergency Management or to his cellphone at 712-269-2422.
