Crawford County Hunger Fighters Back in Denison Next Tuesday, September 19th
The Crawford County Hunger Fighters return to Denison next Tuesday. Warren Hawn with Hunger Fighters discussed the organization's background. “ The Crawford County Hunger Fighters have been in existence the last 10 years so we’ve been around a while. We do the backpack program which is to furnish food for kids to take to supplement their nutritional needs over the weekend and we also do the bulk food program for families throughout Crawford County.” Hawn discussed the specifics of the distribution as well as eligibility. “That’ll be the 19th of this month. We alway have a food distribution on the third Tuesday of each month. The drive-thru, they have to qualify of course in order to receive the food, that’s called the Emergency Food Assistance Program”. Hawn said there’s several ways individuals can be eligible next Tuesday. “There’s three different ways they can qualify for the food. One is based on the gross-income guidelines per family size or if they're already on S.N.A.P. which is food stamps or if their kids are on free or reduced lunches they automatically qualify for the program so if they’re one of those qualified for one of those 3, they are able to get the food. Now they have to sign this eligibility sheet, but just once a year.” Hawn said the Hunger Fighters also have a successful backpack program for students. “For the past 10 years we’ve supplied 7 elementary schools in Crawford County. Last year we delivered 383 sacks weekly to those 7 schools so throughout the year we had delivered a little over 11,224 sacks.” Please note the Crawford County Hunger Fighters come to Denison on the third Tuesday of each month.
