Carroll Broadcasting reports the IKM-Manning Community School District has teamed up with Manning Fire and Rescue to launch a Junior Firefighter program for high school students. This opportunity is available to students aged 16-18 who attend IKM-Manning and reside within the Manning Fire District. The program offers a hands-on experience in emergency response, serving as a supportive role to the department, and provides an alternative to formal firefighter training.
Upon turning 18 and completing the program, students can enroll in the Firefighter 1 Course and apply to become full members of the Manning Fire and Rescue team. To participate, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, be in good academic standing, and pass both a physical and background check. Parental or guardian consent is also required.
Junior Firefighters will attend monthly training drills and assist the department during emergencies, including fires and car accidents. There are safety protocols in place, such as restrictions on responding to calls after 10:00 p.m. on school nights and the requirement to remain under the supervision of a designated Manning Fire and Rescue officer.
Students interested in joining the program should contact the high school counselor or principal to begin the application process. For more information, parents can reach out to Fire Chief John Lorenzen by calling the fire station at 712-790-1373.
