Carroll Man Injured After Semi Collides with Train in Pocahontas County

A Carroll man was injured in a collision between his semi-tractor trailer and a train Wednesday morning in Pocahontas County. The incident took place around 9:54 a.m. on 120th Avenue, just west of Fonda. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 31-year-old Zachary Jansa was driving a 2023 Mack truck northbound when he failed to notice an eastbound train approaching the crossing. The train struck the semi on the driver’s side near the coupling, causing the trailer to detach. The truck came to a stop on its side in a field north of the tracks, while the trailer ended up on the opposite side.
Jansa was transported by EMS to Buena Vista County Hospital for evaluation and was released after several hours. The crash caused significant damage, totaling both the truck and the trailer. Jansa was cited for failing to stop at the railroad crossing as required.
