Denison, IA – In the past 12 hours, Denison Municipal Utilities (DMU) staff have been working tirelessly to address storm-related disruptions to the city's electric and water services. A high volume of alarms and power interruptions were reported, but the quick response from DMU crews ensured minimal impact on the community.
Two electric distribution circuits tripped during the storm, with one being restored in under an hour and the other taking just over an hour to come back online. A two-person crew was deployed to inspect the circuits, checking for downed lines or trees obstructing the system.
In addition to the distribution circuits, DMU's Transmission Line No. 3, which connects the utility’s two main substations, also experienced a trip. The line was temporarily taken offline until staff could assess safety and bring it back into service.
The storm caused a record number of alarms across the DMU electric system, with 380 alarms registered on the SCADA system. These alarms are triggered each time a breaker operation occurs on the electric transmission and distribution system. Despite the high volume of alarms, the electric system performed as designed, ensuring both system protection and service continuity for the community.
In addition to electric system challenges, the water and wastewater treatment plants also experienced disruptions. Each time the system blinked, motors and pumps required manual restarts. DMU thanked its dedicated water and wastewater employees, who were on duty overnight to keep operations running smoothly during the storm.
DMU extended its appreciation to all staff members involved in maintaining service to Denison during the storm event, and emphasized their commitment to providing reliable utilities, even in the face of challenging weather conditions.
