City of Denison Prepares for Major 2nd Avenue Reconstruction Project

DENISON, Iowa — The City of Denison is preparing to launch a major reconstruction project along 2nd Avenue South, spanning from Main Street to South 16th Street. The project will involve full roadway pavement reconstruction, storm sewer and drainage improvements, and the replacement of sidewalks and driveways.
Construction is expected to take place during one of two possible timeframes. The first option would begin in early August 2025 and wrap up by mid-November 2025. If delayed, the second schedule would begin in April 2026 and finish by late July 2026. The final timeline will depend on contractor availability and material scheduling.
The City emphasized that property owners will not be required to replace sidewalks on their own, as any necessary sidewalk work will be included in the project.
Residents along the affected area should prepare for limited or altered access during construction. While access to properties will be maintained to the greatest extent possible, certain times or days may present limitations.
Garbage collection and mail delivery will be rerouted as necessary. Residents are asked to clearly mark their garbage and recycling cans with their name and address. Those experiencing service issues should contact Beck Engineering.
In addition, residents with irrigation systems are being asked to shut them off for the duration of the project to prevent any unnecessary damage. Any sprinkler head located in the public right of way should be clearly marked, as damage to those systems will be the property owner’s responsibility.
A public informational meeting will be held Tuesday, July 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Denison City Hall. The meeting will offer a project overview, anticipated timeline, and a Q&A session. Residents unable to attend can opt to receive weekly email updates on the project’s status. To receive updates, residents are encouraged to contact Michael Richards at Beck Engineering at mrichards@beck-engineering.net or sign up at the July 22 meeting.
For more information or questions, residents are encouraged to attend the informational meeting or respond directly to the letter mailed to affected addresses.
