Carroll Man Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Tractor-SUV Crash That Killed Two

CARROLL, Iowa – A Carroll man accused in a deadly tractor-SUV collision has entered a not guilty plea to multiple charges connected to the April 2025 crash that claimed two lives and seriously injured another person.
Court records show 51-year-old Troy Bluml is facing two counts of homicide by motor vehicle for operating while under the influence. The Iowa State Patrol reports the crash occurred around 10:20 p.m. on April 14 at the intersection of 220th Street and Hawthorne Avenue, southwest of Carroll.
Investigators say Bluml was driving a John Deere tractor towing a manure tank eastbound when he failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding with a northbound Hyundai Santa Fe. The impact pushed the SUV off the roadway. Authorities allege Bluml briefly stopped before leaving the scene without helping the victims or contacting emergency responders.
The crash killed 17-year-old driver Elvin Murillo Castro and 55-year-old passenger Pedro Castro Murillo. Another passenger, 24-year-old Carlos Murillo Castro, suffered serious injuries and spent five nights in the hospital, later requiring additional surgery.
According to investigators, Bluml continued driving through several towns before returning to his home just after midnight. He was arrested later that day and initially charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Bluml is scheduled to appear in court as the case moves forward.
