Sac County Supervisors Opt for Appointment in Sheriff Vacancy

The Sac County Board of Supervisors has decided to move forward with an appointment to fill the sheriff’s office vacancy. Meeting Tuesday morning, the board unanimously approved a resolution to appoint a new sheriff at their Sept. 23 meeting.
County Attorney Ben Smith advised supervisors that they had two options: call for a special election or appoint. A special election, Smith noted, could cost the county at least $30,000 and would still require the elected individual to run again in 2026. By choosing to appoint, the board must now publish an official notice of intent, triggering a waiting period during which residents could petition for a special election.
Until an appointment is finalized, Chief Deputy Katie Stange will step in as acting sheriff. Stange had previously been recommended by outgoing Sheriff Jonathan Meyer, who resigned last week following injuries sustained in an alleged assault.
