DENISON, Iowa — Denison Municipal Utilities is receiving a major federal investment as part of a new round of USDA Rural Development grants announced this week. DMU will receive $1 million to support construction of a new dam along the East Boyer River, a project designed to help recharge groundwater feeding one of the community’s key drinking water wells.
Local officials say the project will help strengthen long-term water security for Denison by improving natural replenishment of the well field. The added stability is expected to support both residential customers and local industries that rely on consistent water availability.
The USDA funding is part of a broader $4.7 million package awarded to five Iowa communities. Other recipients include Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, which will use a $2 million grant to construct a modern dialysis unit, and Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, receiving $1.1 million for updates to its maternity and postpartum care facilities.
Two additional water projects were funded: the City of Macedonia in Pottawattamie County will receive $580,000 to construct a new municipal well, and the City of Clearfield in southwest Iowa will use a $29,000 grant to study its wastewater system and plan future improvements.
For Denison, the USDA’s investment marks a significant step in reinforcing the community’s water infrastructure and ensuring reliable service for years to come.
