Federal funding is headed to rural communities across Iowa as part of a new investment announced Thursday by USDA Rural Development.

The agency says more than $8 million in combined loans and grants will be distributed statewide to help upgrade essential infrastructure. According to USDA Rural Development Iowa State Director Michael Sexton, the funding includes $3.9 million in loans and $4.17 million in grants supporting 13 projects throughout Iowa.

One of the recipients is the City of Ricketts, which has been awarded a $200,000 loan along with a $900,000 grant to modernize its wastewater system. Planned improvements include sewer lining, manhole sealing, and the construction of a new three-cell controlled-discharge lagoon designed to bring the system into compliance with current water-quality standards.

Sexton says USDA understands the pressures facing smaller communities as they work to maintain reliable water systems and emergency services while supporting the nation’s food supply. He adds that federal investment in rural infrastructure is aimed at strengthening agricultural communities and improving quality of life for residents.

Beyond Ricketts, roughly $7 million in additional funding will be used in 19 other counties across Iowa for a variety of projects, including housing preservation efforts and the installation of emergency weather sirens.
