Buena Vista County Man Receives 30-Month Federal Sentence in Gun Case

A Buena Vista County resident is heading to federal prison following a conviction involving an illegal firearm. Taxavier Ford, 29, of Alta, was sentenced to 30 months behind bars after admitting to possessing a gun despite being prohibited from doing so due to prior felony convictions in both Indiana and Iowa.

According to court documents, the incident dates back to a traffic stop in Storm Lake in March of last year. Police stopped Ford for a vehicle equipment violation and noted the odor of marijuana. A subsequent search led officers to a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband.

In addition to the prison term, Ford will face three years of supervised release once he completes his sentence. He is currently being held by the U.S. Marshals Service while awaiting placement at a federal correctional facility.
The investigation involved the Storm Lake Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with prosecution handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sioux City.
