Schleswig Mayor Pushes Back Following State Audit Findings

(Schleswig, Iowa) Mayor for the city of Schleswig, Beth Winquist, is defending the City of Schleswig after a recent state audit report raised concerns about the city’s financial oversight and compliance practices.
In a social media post, Winquist said Schleswig’s public officials are honest and described city leaders as volunteers working to improve the community despite tight budgets, limited staffing, and the challenges many small rural towns face.
She also criticized Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand, accusing him of using the city’s struggles for political purposes and saying she would oppose any future campaign for governor.
The audit report identified multiple findings tied to bookkeeping controls, budget issues, reconciliations, and other financial procedures during the review period from July 2024 through June 2025. State auditors issued recommendations intended to strengthen oversight and accountability.
Mayor Winquist's full statement:
“I can assure you that public officials are honest in Schleswig, Iowa. We are volunteers that work to better our community with less than adequate budgets. Like many small towns in the great rural state of Iowa, we often struggle to meet all demands with limited staff and population. Shame on you for referring otherwise. Shame on you for using our struggles for your political grandstanding. Not only have you lost my vote, you have convinced me that you are not fit to be governor. I will campaign against you.”
Beth Winquist, Mayor of Schleswig
