Holt Praises Shelby County Pipeline Removal as Victory for Local Landowners

(DENISON, Iowa) -- State Representative Steven Holt (R-Denison) today issued the following statement regarding the announcement that Summit Carbon Solutions has submitted a new proposed route to the Iowa Utilities Commission that would entirely remove its carbon pipeline from Shelby County.
"This is a great day for the Landowners of Shelby County," Holt said. "They have been at Ground Zero in the fight for property rights. Shelby County was the first county in the state to enact ordinances and setbacks to try to protect their citizens, and the landowners of Shelby County, the 'Red Shirts,' as they have become known, have been front and center in this struggle."
Representative Holt has been a leading voice in the Iowa House for legislation to restrict the use of eminent domain for private projects. Earlier this year, he spearheaded the passage of House File 2104, a bill aimed at protecting landowners from forced easements.
"While the battle goes on for other impacted landowners who do not want the pipeline on their property, today the landowners of Shelby County achieved victory, and can finally breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that their property rights will be respected," Holt said. "I will continue to fight for the landowner rights of all Iowans in the Iowa House."
HF 2104 passed the Iowa House 64-28, but died in the Iowa Senate.
