Ceremony Details Shaping Up for The Wall That Heals
Excitement continues to build as Manning prepares to host The Wall That Heals, the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Education Center that will be on display in the community from July 23-July 26.
The Wall That Heals is a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., bringing the experience of the nation’s most visited memorial to communities across America. The exhibit provides an opportunity for veterans, families and visitors to reflect on the sacrifices made during the Vietnam War while learning more about the conflict and those who served.
In addition to the wall itself, several special ceremonies are being planned throughout the week. The Welcome Home Ceremony will be held Thursday, July 23 at 6 p.m. Organizers have assembled an impressive lineup of speakers and musicians for the event.
The keynote address will be delivered by Gerald “Gerry” Berry, a decorated Vietnam veteran and public speaker widely known for piloting "Lady Ace 09," the helicopter that evacuated U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin during the Fall of Saigon. Area nurse honor guards and veteran organizations will also participate. Music will be provided by Brad Morgan, the award-winning musical artist and son of a local Vietnam veteran, and Don Struve, who was at the original dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., in 1982.
The ceremony is intended to honor Vietnam veterans and provide the welcome home many never received upon returning from service.
Another moving event will take place Friday evening during the Candlelight Vigil at 9:30 p.m. The key speaker at that event will be Josh Turek, a two-time Paralympic gold medalist for Team USA and a state legislator. Born with spina bifida after his dad was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam, Turek will lead the vigil, which specifically honors victims of Agent Orange exposure and those affected by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. This event will conclude with the playing of bagpipes by Mackenzie Highlanders Pipes & Drums of Iowa.
Organizers encourage residents from the region to attend the ceremonies and visit the wall throughout its stay. Whether paying tribute to a loved one, honoring a veteran, or learning more about an important chapter in American history, The Wall That Heals offers a meaningful experience for visitors of all ages.
Visitors are also encouraged to reach out for a group tour, small or large, by calling 712-655-2176.
