Denison holding special election for First Ward seat on City Council
The City of Denison is holding a Special Election to fill the First Ward Denison City Council seat. The election was requested by petition and will take place on the earliest possible date of Tuesday, August 3, 2021. This election will fill the first ward seat vacated by David Loeschen until the current term ends on December 31, 2021. This seat will also be up for re-election on November 2, 2021 for the 4-year term beginning January 1, 2022.
Loeschen’s four-year term expires at the end of this year following his May 1 resignation. The council voted almost unanimously with one member absent on June 15 to appoint Dustin Logan to the vacant seat. The petition has 35 signatures by eligible electors which exceeds the minimum of 33.
Logan is one of three individuals who wrote a letter saying he is interested in the appointment. The others are retired city employee and past mayor Dennis Fineran along with retired Denison Community School District business manager Larry Struck. Logan is the only interested candidate who attended the June 15 meeting in-person.
Any candidate that would like their name on the ballot will need to file their paperwork with the city by 5:00 p.m. on July 9, 2021. Potential candidates in the first ward will need 25 signatures from eligible electors in first ward. They will need to fill out an Affidavit of Candidacy Form and a nomination petition with the required signatures attached.
