Crawford Supervisors Set Levy Hearing, Leave Workforce Development

The Crawford County Board of Supervisors set a public hearing about a proposed property tax levy during their weekly meeting.

The hearing is set for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7 at the courthouse. Officials say the levy rate is something that should be finalized before the county can move forward with the budget process.

The board approved more than $10,000 for Plains Area Mental Health to get Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. Callers that reached out to a suicide hotline with ASIST-trained counselors on the phone are 31% likely to feel less depressed and 74% likely to be less suicidal, according to a National Institute of Health study.

They also unanimously approved a resolution to withdraw from Workforce Development. The state originally designed the program to assist unemployed and disabled people with education, job training, and financial services. Many of the 18 counties in the Western Iowa region are already leaving and others like it in Iowa are disbanding because of frustrations about losing local control over it, according to multiple reports.

The board approved a contract of nearly $1.6 million with Graves Construction of Spencer along with other project documents for replacing the L51 bridge over the Soldier River. The supervisors also accepted annual reports by the Conservation Board and Historic Preservation Commission as presented.
