FFA Week Highlights Student Leadership, Personal Development
FFA Week is underway as chapters across the nation highlight the days with school-wide activities and outreach.
Denison co-advisor Rebecca Dresen says student leadership is a key part of this week and the organization overall.
“Everything we’re doing is planned by the students for the week. We just kind of help order things and get things in order but it really is student-led and then a big thing is recruitment. So these kids see how much fun it is, all these activities we’re doing, and they think maybe next year I should take an ag class and be part of FFA because this looks like a lot of fun,” said Dresen.
Boyer Valley advisor Chelsea Schroeder says FFA is not just about plows and sows.
“It’s definitely way more than that. There are communication skills. There’s a lot of fun to be had. I have a lot of students that come from a city background and live in town and they really flourish and ignite their passion for FFA. It’s a community organization and our ultimate goal is to bring everyone together and show them we are a family,” said Schroeder.
Denison co-advisor Liah Murray says she is an example of FFA helping unlock someone’s true potential.
“I grew up in town actually. I’m not from a farm. I didn’t have any agricultural background. Joining FFA really brought me out of my shell. If I didn’t join it I would not be here today. I’m a super quiet shy person. Joining that, learning all aspects of it, and seeing how involved other kids got. That made me want to do it and then made me want to share my passion with other kids and help them figure out who they are. Not just in ag but as a person overall,” said Murray.
The organization involves nearly 19,000 members across the state of Iowa alone. You can find out more about FFA or a chapter in your area online at: www.ffa.org.
