Denison Aquatic Center Offers Training That Could Save Lives
Parks and Recreation Director Brian Kempfert says lifeguards are crucial for the facility to run.
“Well, it definitely helps us to open up our facility! So I mean if we don't have lifeguards it's kind of a struggle to be able to open up a pool. I mean you don't have to even be a lifeguard in order to take lifeguard training, you can take it just to have the knowledge.” says Kempfert
He says the course is $160 for people ages 15 and older and is a 30-hour course. The training is focused on basic first aid, water rescue, CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). Kempfert says there are many situations where it can be useful.
“I know we've had a couple people in the past that have taken it just because they're going to be out on a boat a lot with family during the summer. Just having a general knowledge of how to go rescue someone how to still perform CPR and first aid until EMS could get there and arrive at the scene.”
He also mentioned more benefits upon completing the course.
“We have a great deal for individuals that would come and work for us here at the Denison Aquatic Center where they only have to pay the deposit down, they take the class and pass the class and then they work a certain number of hours for us during the summer season. Then essentially they get their money back and they get the class for free,” says Kempfert.
Pre-registration is required to secure a spot for in-person or blended training.
