Historic McHenry House Gearing Up for Tourist Season
The Historic McHenry House, a beloved landmark in Crawford County, is preparing to welcome tourists for another spring season of exploration and discovery.
Nancy Bliesman says it all kicks off on March 16th where there will be a book signing for author Ann Hanigan. She also says a month later, on April 16th a 4H club will meet at the house to take pictures for a project.
In May The McHenry House plans 3rd-grade tours for students at Denison Community Schools.
"We tell the 3rd-grade kids if you're in a room that looks really nice we've raised enough money to redo that room. But when you're 130 years old your walls get kinda cracked."
With June quickly approaching, Bliesman says it is like traveling back in time to see the items collected from the McHenry family and from other families in Crawford County.
"A few years ago we had 17 members of the McHenry family in the house. It was really cool to listen to all the events that they remembered when they were growing up."
The McHenry House is open on the first and third weekends of June, July, and August. She added that private tours are available through request. Bliesman says the Crawford County Historical Society is a small organization. They run on donations from individuals and private organizations to keep the house up to date.
