Crawford County Hunger Fighters Helps Combat Hunger For Elementary Students
The Crawford County Hunger Fighters have been operating within Denison and the surrounding communities for eight years. They are a 100% volunteer organization with little overhead costs, relying on donations. Crawford County Hunger Fighters President Warren Hawn said 97.3% of every dollar they receive goes to the purchase of food. “So you can be assured that your donations are going to what they are supposed to go.” They provide drive-thru food distributions on the third Tuesday of every month at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. They usually have upwards of 225 distributions on those days. Furthermore, they also have a backpack program, where sacks of food are delivered to seven elementary schools in Crawford County. Hawn said it started because some teachers from the elementary school came to them, saying there were too many kids coming to school on Monday morning hungry. They needed something to supplement their nutritional needs over the weekend when school meals weren’t available. “The school determines which children would get the sacks. We were currently delivering, this last year, 383 sacks per week to seven different schools within the county,” said Hawn. This school year alone, the Crawford County Hunger Fighters delivered 11,224 sacks at a cost of $40,716.24.
