District 4 Congressional candidates to debate

The Des Moines Register reports that the campaigns for Fourth District Congressional candidates, Randy Feenstra and J.D. Scholten have agreed to a debate on October 21st on WHO-13. The timing comes as both candidates are hustling through the campaign trail. The campaign manager for Scholten, the Democratic candidate, Lauren McIlvane, had disdain for the timing of Feenstra's acceptance, telling reporters “Now that he's been backed into a corner, he has agreed to one debate. But only two weeks after voting has started.” Scholten has been critical of Feenstra for declining earlier debate requests.

Feenstra, the Republican candidate, had a rebuttal for the criticisms, as he told media that he has no shortage of public appearances, and specifically pointed to four non-televised candidate forums where he has appeared with Scholten. Feenstra also referenced his experience with the primary, saying “I think I did seven debates in the primary. I think people know me pretty well with all the debates I've done, and I'm excited to do the WHO debate.

While this will be the first and only televised debate between the two, they have not been shy of exchanging shots at each other over Twitter. Scholten has been vocal lately of Feenstra declining earlier debate invitations, while Feenstra has targeted Scholten's support for policies that Feenstra believes will hurt agriculture.
