Former Harlan resident, now police officer, injured in collision

This past weekend, a Harlan native, Officer Jon Kaufman with the West Des Moines Police department stopped a vehicle on Interstate 35 that had been traveling over 100 miles per hour. The intoxicated driver was arrested. While Kaufman was waiting for a tow truck to arrive, his police SUV was struck by a vehicle being operated by a distracted driver who had been drinking. Officer Kaufman, who is the son of Mark and Sherrie Kaufman, sustained serious injuries from the crash and is still hospitalized. His condition is improving, but there will be challenges to come for him and his family as he recovers. He is married to Dena Baughman, the daughter of Jim and Lori Baughman of Kirkman. They are expecting their first child in about a month. Many people have inquired as to how they can offer support for the family. A Venmo account where donations will go directly to them has been made. The account is @Caring-For-Kaufman. You may have to enter the number 9268 to donate. That information can be found on KDSNradio.com in the news section.
