Monona County man found guilty of murder

22-year-old Eliot Stowe of Castana, who was accused of killing his grandmother in June of 2018 at her rural home in Castana has been found guilty of first degree murder. Judge Zachary Hindman presided over the bench trial, and read the verdict Friday, November 13th in Monona County District Court in Onawa.

The charge comes two years after 66-year-old Cheryl Stowe's body was found wrapped in a rug and at the edge of a cornfield near her residence. Prosecutors say Eliot Stowe had used a baseball bat as a weapon. His defense team has argued that he suffers from schizophrenia and that he's not guilty by reason of insanity. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without opportunity for parole. His public defender Jennifer Solberg said, "I'm very disappointed with the decision, based on the evidence that was presented at trial." A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled.
