OABCIG Student Made Gun Threat to Middle School Monday
(ODEBOLT, IOWA)- On September 30", 2024 around 0300 hours, Sac County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the FBI regarding a Snapchat message that contained a potential threat to OABCIG Middle School in Odebolt. The context of this threat involved a statement by a student to bring a gun to the school.
A joint investigation with Ida County Sheriff's Office was initiated to include searches, interviews, and contact with parents. By approximately 0530 hours it was determined by law enforcement that the threat was not credible after having contact with the student. The student made admissions to law enforcement that they were the author of the Snapchat message and did not have the means or intent of carrying out this threat. The student was charged with lowa Code 708A.5: Threats of Terrorism, a class D felony, and has been referred to juvenile court officials.
While offcial findings indicated this threat to not be credible, Sac County Sheriff's Office takes all potential threats to our schools seriously. An increased law enforcement presence occurred at OABCIG this morning as a precautionary measure. Internal notification was made to parents by OABCIG administration once necessary follow up information was obtained.
