Dunlap Pond Project Highlighted in Statewide Water Quality Investment

DUNLAP, Iowa (April 28, 2025) – The Pleasant View Pond in Dunlap will soon see significant environmental upgrades, thanks to a major investment from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced on Monday that Dunlap is one of 14 Iowa communities selected to receive funding for urban water quality projects as part of the state’s Water Quality Initiative.

The Pleasant View Pond Improvements project in Dunlap will receive $236,358 in state support to implement water quality enhancements that will benefit both the environment and local residents. The improvements include the construction of a forebay and wetland system designed to treat runoff from 474 acres of agricultural land before it enters the pond. In addition, two bioretention cells will be built to capture and filter urban drainage.

“This investment will not only improve water quality but also create better wildlife habitat, enhance fishing opportunities, and offer a more enjoyable recreational space for our community,” said local officials. “It’s a win for both the environment and the people of Dunlap.”

The project aligns with the goals of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy, which aims to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus runoff into Iowa’s waterways. Secretary Naig emphasized that every Iowan—whether from a large city or small town—has a role to play in conserving natural resources like soil and water.

“In Dunlap and communities across the state, we are seeing local leaders step up to be part of the solution,” said Naig. “These projects are not only about cleaner water, but also about community pride, education, and legacy.”

Since 2015, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has supported 140 urban water quality projects across the state. The 2025 initiative includes a nearly $2.7 million state investment, leveraging more than $5.7 million in total funding with support from local and private partners.

The improvements to Pleasant View Pond are expected to provide long-term benefits by reducing sediment and nutrient loads while also enhancing the pond’s role as a community gathering place and natural asset. The project will also include education and outreach efforts to help raise awareness about the importance of stormwater management and conservation practices.
