More than a month after a deadly crash in Buena Vista County, a Cherokee man is facing criminal charges.
According to court records, 28-year-old Jorge Ortega-Ortega has been charged with homicide by vehicle due to reckless driving. The charge follows a two-vehicle collision on the morning of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, that claimed the life of 65-year-old Rose Bumsted of Nemaha.
Investigators say the crash occurred around 6:25 a.m. on Iowa Highway 3. Ortega-Ortega was reportedly driving a 2020 Honda Civic westbound when he activated his left turn signal and entered the eastbound lane near the intersection with County Highway M27, several miles east of Cherokee. The resulting collision led to Bumsted’s death.
The case is now moving forward in the criminal justice system.
