Headline: Sac County Supervisors Plan to Appoint New Sheriff Following McClure’s Retirement

The Sac County Board of Supervisors is preparing to appoint a new sheriff at their upcoming July 22 meeting, following the retirement of longtime Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure. After nearly 40 years in law enforcement, McClure officially stepped down on June 26.

Faced with the decision to either hold a special election or make an appointment, the board determined during its July 1 meeting that appointing a replacement was the more practical option. A special election would have cost the county an estimated $25,000 and placed added pressure on the county auditor’s office, only for the elected individual to serve until November 2026.

In accordance with Iowa law, the board is required to publicly post a notice of its intent to appoint, allowing county residents the opportunity to provide feedback. That notice has now been published, setting the stage for the board to select a candidate from internal applicants at its July 22 meeting.

If no petition requesting a special election is filed within 14 days after the appointment, the chosen individual will serve as Sac County Sheriff through the remainder of the term, ending with the next general election in 2026.
