Denison City Council to Review Zoning Changes, Wellness Center Progress, and Police Department Updates

The Denison City Council will hold its regular meeting tonight, Tuesday, September 2, at 5 p.m. in Council Chambers. The session will also be accessible via Zoom for those wishing to follow remotely.
A public hearing on proposed zoning changes will open the meeting. Following that, the council is expected to act on several consent agenda items, including approval of minutes and bills, special event permits for Denison High School’s Homecoming 2025 celebrations, and the hiring of two new city employees—Therese Slechta as a probationary communications operator and James Krajicek as a police officer.
One of the largest discussion items involves the Crawford County Wellness Center project, with action on a $641,759 payment application, a $5,104 change request, and more than $221,000 in proposed fitness equipment purchases.
The council will also review engineering proposals for the Broadway Resurfacing Project, including agreements with Beck Engineering and Certified Testing, as well as temporary easement approval for property on South 14th Street. Street and alley conditions are also slated for discussion.
Other agenda highlights include:
-
Possible approval of new Communication Center policies
-
A reorganization plan for the Denison Police Department
-
Consideration of a Police Department Gun Purchase Program
-
A contract termination agreement involving the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Monogram Food Solutions
-
Propane contracts, pest control services, and a $9,200 roof project for the library
-
Updated employee handbooks for City Hall, the Building Department, and Public Works
-
A service agreement with Denison Municipal Utilities
The council will also consider the first reading—or full adoption—of an ordinance amending zoning changes to city parcels. The evening will conclude with reports from the mayor and city manager.
Residents are encouraged to attend in person, dial in by phone, or join via Zoom to stay informed on city business.
