Sheriff Jon Meyer Steps Down, Returns to Sergeant Role

SAC COUNTY, Iowa — Sheriff Jonathan C. Meyer has announced his decision to resign from his position as Sheriff of Sac County, effective immediately. In a letter to the Board of Supervisors dated Monday, September 1, 2025, Meyer cited personal reasons that require his focused attention as the basis for his decision.

Meyer, who will return to his previous role as Sergeant within the department, acknowledged the challenges of serving in a leadership capacity. “I believe that stepping back into the Sergeant position is the right course of action, allowing me to better balance my personal circumstances while continuing to contribute to our department’s mission,” Meyer wrote.

In his letter, Meyer expressed gratitude for the trust and support he received during his tenure as Sheriff, highlighting the lessons learned and the privilege of working alongside dedicated law enforcement professionals.

Looking ahead, Meyer recommended that Chief Deputy Katie Stange be appointed to the Sheriff’s position. “I also would recommend that Chief Deputy Katie Stange be placed in the sheriff position,” he stated.

Meyer closed his letter by reaffirming his commitment to serve the county in his capacity as Sergeant, thanking the Board and the community for their continued support.
