Sac City Man Charged in Violent Assault on Sac County Sheriff

SAC CITY, Iowa — KTIV reports authorities say a Sac City man has been charged after a violent confrontation that left Sac County Sheriff Jonathan Meyer seriously injured, just days before his resignation.
According to court records, 33-year-old Matthew Birt faces two charges, including willful injury causing serious injury, in connection with the August 25th incident.
The alleged assault occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. at Meyer’s home in Sac City. Investigators say Birt confronted the sheriff in his backyard, striking him in the back of the head, tackling him to the ground, and attempting to strangle him. A neighbor intervened, allowing Meyer to get onto his hands and knees, but witnesses say Birt then kicked him in the side of the face.
The criminal complaint notes that Meyer never retaliated during the attack. The witness also reported hearing Birt threaten to kill Meyer if he ever spoke to Birt’s wife again.
Meyer sustained multiple injuries, including a concussion, a fractured orbital socket, bruising, and a torn ear that required stitches.
Birt later admitted to assaulting Meyer during a police interview, according to the complaint. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 15th at 3:00 p.m. in Sac County District Court.
