Former Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts Transferred to Federal Custody

WOODBURY COUNTY, Iowa – Former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts is no longer being held in the Woodbury County Jail.
Sheriff Chad Sheehan confirmed Thursday, October 2, 2025, that Roberts was transferred into the custody of the United States Department of Justice on a federal warrant. The details of the warrant have not been publicly disclosed.
“All inquiries shall be directed to the U.S. Department of Justice or the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Sheriff Sheehan said in a statement.
Roberts, who previously led Iowa’s largest school district, has faced growing legal scrutiny in recent months. His case will now be handled at the federal level.
